Perhaps the most important aspect of building smarter business solutions involves our team's focus on efficiency. When we talk about efficiency, we mean this in many related ways. Of course, we always strive to build technically efficient products for our customers; that is, we ensure our code works efficiently and in turn that sites and web applications we develop are peppy and responsive. But we also strive to ensure efficiency in other ways, such as in user interface design where we strive to make using our systems as uncomplicated as possible across the entire spectrum of usability, extendability, scalability, updatability, and maintainability.
Another aspect of efficiency is in terms of our internal work processes, where a combination of multitasking (i.e. doing several project tasks at once whenever possible) and task assignment (i.e. making sure the right people with the right skills work on the right tasks) help us to increase our development speed while also creating better end products.
Best practices are usually called those for a reason, and this is particularly so when it comes to the web. We use leading web standard and design standards for a range of reasons in all of our projects, including to help maintain cross-browser/cross-platform compatibility; taking advantage of natural SEO opportunities (i.e. search engines 'like' sites to be designed in a certain way); providing a friendly end-user experience; and to help further attain our development ideals of efficiency.
Another important area where web standards comes into play is in terms of "graceful degradation." We strive to ensure that the projects we develop will still retain as much functionality as possible despite some end-users not using the most recent versions of common web browsing technologies. We also strive to maintain accessibility standards to help users with special needs, such as the visually impaired, have a positive, functional web browsing experience.
Maybe you've seen it before: a website that looks really quite nice but simply doesn't communicate effectively at all? We have found that the most common reason for this kind of design dilemma is that the development process failed to recognise the needs of the web site/application's users. This is why our design and development team put "people assessment" — that is, determining the needs of all users of the site/application, from administrators through to end users — at the forefront of our design process. By doing this, we can ensure that our work is consistently built around user's expectations, requirements, and skills, which in turn helps to ensure that the sites/applications we develop can accomplish their goals.
Everyone knows the old adage — you never get a second chance to make a first impression. This is particularly the case on the web, where increasingly, an individual's first impression of a company is no t when they visit your storefront or call you on the phone, but when they visit your website. It is for reasons such as this that we strive to ensure that all of our projects are also designed with that old maxim in mind.
In practice, this translates into our design and development teams ensuring that our client's sites/applications look great, work efficiently, and accomplish the specific goals they set out to do... while also quite often truly impressing site visitors/application users in the process.
